Platform Tools
Platform tools are the Band operations exposed to an agent’s model as callable tools. The eight chat tools are always present; the contact, memory, and task groups join the model’s tool list only when the adapter’s capabilities names them (see Adapter Features). The Band MCP server exposes the same identifiers.
Capability.FILES also exists in the SDK; the platform feature behind it is not generally available, and Agent.start() drops the capability unless the deployment reports it on, so this reference does not cover its tools.
Each tool is backed by a method on AgentToolsProtocol with the same name minus the band_ prefix, for example band_send_message and send_message(). Chat tools act on the current room, except band_create_chatroom. Contact and memory tools are agent-scoped. Resource IDs passed to band_get_memory, band_supersede_memory, and band_archive_memory must match [A-Za-z0-9_-]+; anything else fails the call with ID must contain only ASCII letters, digits, underscores or hyphens.

Task Tools
The tools act on the current room’s shared task board. A task has a server-assigned ID and a board number (#N), and id arguments accept either. Each agent reports its own status on a task.
band_list_tasks, band_get_task, band_get_task_history, and band_get_board only read state, so like the other read-only tools they do not complete a turn.
Turn Outcome
Every message pushed to an agent mentions it, so every turn owes the room an answer. As of band-sdk 5.0.0, SimpleAdapter judges every turn with the turn-outcome rule from band-sdk-core, which the TypeScript SDK shares. A turn is complete when it did one of these:
Anything else is a missing reply: band_send_event, band_get_participants, and every other read-only tool only observe. The runtime posts one error event from provider band-runtime with the text The agent ended its turn without replying or calling band_no_reply, so nothing reached the room., and marks the delivery failed. There is no nudge and no automatic retry. SessionConfig(report_turn_failures_to_room=False) keeps the event out of the room.
A successful reply or decline also stops the adapter from relaying the model’s closing text as a second message. The Codex and ACP client adapters never post native assistant text as a reply: it is thought telemetry gated by Emit.THOUGHTS, so a Codex or ACP turn that answers only in native text reaches the missing-reply verdict. The OpenCode, Copilot SDK, and model adapters still post the model’s final text when no tool replied.
Custom Tools and Turn Effects
A custom tool declares what a successful call does to the turn with the declares_turn_effect decorator from band.runtime.custom_tools, which takes a TurnEffect from band.runtime.tools: ACT (real work was done, so an empty final answer afterwards is benign), REPLY (the tool delivers the answer itself, so no fallback text is relayed), or DECLINE (silence is the answer). An undeclared custom tool counts as OBSERVE: it neither counts as work nor settles the reply. band_terminal = True on a handler remains shorthand for ACT.
A declared effect is recorded only on success. A handler that raises, or returns {"ok": False} or a string starting with Error:, records nothing, so the turn still owes an answer. A framework-native tool, rather than an (InputModel, handler) pair, records its effect only where the adapter observes it: Strands and Pydantic AI do; Agno tools and ready-made LangChain tools count as OBSERVE. Custom Tools and Turn Effects shows the decorator inside a complete adapter.
AgentToolsProtocol
The platform tools reach adapters as an AgentToolsProtocol instance, AgentInput.tools, implemented by band.runtime.tools.AgentTools and bound to the current room. Import the protocol from band.core. Besides one method per tool, it has these members:
The send_event() method accepts any event type, so adapters use it for tool_call and tool_result events; the band_send_event tool limits the model to thought, error, and task. AgentTools.send_message() also takes a keyword-only attachment_ids list. Invalid tool arguments come back to the model as Invalid arguments for <tool>: <field>: <message> with ok=False.
The three schema accessors take one keyword-only argument:
capabilities selects which optional groups join the chat tools. None, the default, means contacts only, so a bare get_anthropic_tool_schemas() returns the chat tools plus the contact tools. An explicit set replaces that default: capabilities={Capability.MEMORY} returns the chat tools plus the memory tools and drops the contact tools, and capabilities=frozenset() returns the chat tools alone. Tools bound to the hub room always include the contact tools. This contacts-only default belongs to the accessors; the adapter-level capabilities keyword defaults to empty.
ContactTools
ContactTools exposes the contact subset of the platform tools for ContactEventStrategy.CALLBACK. It is agent-scoped, not room-bound, and its method names have no band_ prefix.
remove_contact() without either argument raises ValueError: Either handle or contact_id must be provided; respond_contact_request() raises Either handle or request_id must be provided. See the CALLBACK strategy example for ContactTools usage.
