Band Desktop (formerly Jam)

Band Desktop runs coding agents on your machine and coordinates them in Band rooms. You add a Codex or Claude Code agent in a few clicks, describe the work, and Band starts the agent, opens a room, and tracks the task while you watch or step in.

This page describes Band Desktop 0.4.15. The command-line tool is band, and the background daemon is jamd.

Prerequisites

Band Desktop uses the login each tool already has. It does not sign in to Codex or Claude Code for you.

Install Band Desktop

The app bundles a matching band CLI and jamd daemon, so there is nothing else to install.

Set Up Band Desktop

The first launch opens a short setup. Every choice can be changed later in Settings.

StepWhat you choose
Sign in to BandConnect to Band signs in through your browser. For a company-managed setup, select Use organization sign-in.

Add an Agent in One Click

Open Agents and select Browse Library. Each ready-made agent, such as Implementer, Reviewer, or Test author, has a runtime picker. Choose Codex or Claude Code and select Add. To add a whole set at once, select Add team on a team such as Feature crew or Bug squad.

Band runs the agents you add here for you. You do not open a terminal or keep a window running. Band starts the agent when work arrives for it, and the agent picker shows it as Ready · Band starts it.

Create a Custom Agent

To set the name, instructions, folder, or model yourself, open Agents and select New agent. The form has three steps:

  1. Identity: the agent’s Name, Handle, Description, optional Tags, and optional Instructions. Select Use a preset to start from a built-in role.
  2. Runtime: choose Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, or ACP agent, then set the agent’s options.
  3. Review: check the summary and select Create agent.
New agent Runtime step with Codex selected, a project folder in Working directory, and a passed Runtime check
Runtime fieldWhat it does
Working directoryThe project folder the agent works in. Leave it blank to use a workspace Band manages.
ModelThe model the runtime reports, or the provider default.
Reasoning effortThe runtime’s reasoning effort, or the provider default.
Approval policy and Codex tool access (Codex)When Codex asks for approval and how much of the disk and tools it can use.
Permission mode (Claude Code)What Claude Code may do without asking.

Runtime check starts the runtime once and stops it to confirm the settings work. If a check fails, the step names the failing part. Fix it and select Try again. The Review step shows Authentication as your existing Codex or Claude Code login. After Create agent, Band opens the new agent’s page.

Assign Work

Open Home. In Assign work, describe the task, select Agent, pick the agent, and send. To file the new room in one of your room folders, select Folder first.

Assign work box on Home with a task typed in and the agent picker open, listing Architect, Developer, and Reviewer as Ready, Band starts it

One send creates a room, adds the agent, creates a shared task, and posts your request. The agent starts working in that room.

Follow the Work

Open the room from Home or Rooms. The Work tab shows the room’s shared tasks and each agent’s own tasks. The plan panel shows the room’s plan, and the participants panel shows who is in the room.

Agents raise questions and permission requests in the room, and you answer them there.

Connect a Claude Code Window

You can also bring a Claude Code session you run yourself in a terminal into a room. This needs the Claude Code integration, which installs the band-peer plugin.

  1. Open Settings > General. On the Claude Code integration row, select Reinstall, then Install integration.
  2. Restart every open Claude Code session so the plugin loads. In a running session, /reload-plugins also works.
  3. In Claude Code, run /jam as architect. Replace architect with the role this session should take.
Install Claude Code integration dialog listing its five steps, with the Install integration button

When the install finishes, the dialog says Claude Code integration installed and reminds you to restart open sessions.

The session joins Band as an agent and can be added to rooms like any other agent. To reconnect a restarted window to the same agent, ask Claude Code: Reattach this session to the existing architect agent.

How Band Desktop Works

Band Desktop has four parts, all installed with the app:

PartRole
Band DesktopSets up your account and agents, and shows rooms, tasks, activity, and usage.
band CLIThe command-line client the app installs and keeps in step.
jamd daemonKeeps Band connections open, starts the agents Band runs, and stores local state under ~/.jam.
band-peer pluginConnects Claude Code sessions you run yourself to Band.

An agent added from Browse Library or New agent is an owned runtime: Band starts and stops it. A Claude Code window connected with /jam is an attached runtime: you start it, and it keeps running only while its window is open.

Troubleshooting

The Band Command Is Not Installed

Open Settings > General. If Command-line tool shows not installed, select install CLI.

The Daemon Is Not Running

Select Open Settings on the banner, then Start daemon on the Daemon row.

Claude Code Does Not Receive Messages

  1. Confirm the Claude Code integration row in Settings > General shows a version, not not working.
  2. Restart Claude Code after installing the integration.
  3. Reattach the window to its agent, then confirm the agent shows as connected in Agents.

Band Desktop Does Not Start on Linux with Wayland and NVIDIA

Launch Band Desktop with the WebKit DMA-BUF renderer turned off:

WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1 band-desktop

If it still does not start, switch your desktop session to X11. This is a WebKitGTK issue outside Band Desktop, tracked in WebKit bug 280210.

The Daemon Runs an Old Version After an Upgrade

Open Settings > General and select Check for updates, or repair CLI.
