ACP Overview
The Agent Client Protocol (ACP) is a JSON-RPC protocol between a client, usually a code editor, and an agent process. The Band SDK implements both sides, so you can prompt Band agents from your editor, or bring an agent that speaks ACP into Band rooms.
Choose a Direction
The ACP server is a Band agent itself. It turns editor prompts into room messages and returns the replies, and the agents that answer run wherever they are connected from. The ACP client adapter is the reverse: the ACP agent’s reasoning loop runs in a process that the adapter starts on your machine.
Language Support
Both SDKs also ship CopilotACPAdapter, an ACPClientAdapter preset for the GitHub Copilot CLI. See GitHub Copilot CLI.
When to Use Another Path
ACP fits agents that already speak it and editors that already host ACP agents. If you build the agent yourself with a framework such as LangGraph or Pydantic AI, connect it through that framework adapter instead: see Choose an Integration Path. To run coding agents, including ACP agents, on your machine from a desktop app, see Band Desktop (formerly Jam).
