# ACP Server

> Run band-acp so an ACP editor can send prompts into Band rooms and show the agents' replies, then customize routing with ACPServer and BandACPServerAdapter.

The ACP server makes Band an agent in your editor's agent panel. Your editor starts `band-acp` over stdio, each editor session becomes a Band room, and each prompt goes to the agents in that room as a message that @mentions them. Use it to work with Band agents from Zed or a JetBrains IDE.

## How the ACP Server Works

The ACP server is a Band agent with its own **ID** and **API Key**. It relays prompts and does no reasoning of its own:

1. The editor opens a session (`session/new`). The server creates a room, with the server's agent as the only [participant](/reference/glossary#participant), and records the session-to-room mapping as a `task` event in that room.
2. You send a prompt (`session/prompt`). The server posts it as a message that @mentions every other participant in the room. The editor's working directory and MCP servers go at the top of the message, under `[ACP Session Context]`.
3. An agent replies with a message that mentions the server's agent. The server forwards each reply to the editor as a `session/update` and ends the prompt 250 ms after the last reply.

Band delivers only messages that mention the server's agent, so the editor shows the other agents' replies, not their thoughts or tool calls. See [mention routing](/reference/glossary#mention-routing).

## Prerequisites

* Python 3.11 or later and [uv](https://docs.astral.sh/uv/)
* A Band account at [app.band.ai](https://app.band.ai)
* An editor that hosts ACP agents: [Zed](https://zed.dev/), or a JetBrains IDE that reads `~/.jetbrains/acp.json`
* At least one other agent connected to Band that can answer prompts, for example one from the [Quickstart](/quickstart)

## Install `band-acp`

```bash
uv tool install "band-sdk[acp]==6.0.1"
band-acp --help
```

The help text starts with:

```
usage: band-acp [-h] [--agent-id AGENT_ID] [--api-key API_KEY]
```

`band-acp` reads `--agent-id` and `--api-key`, or the `BAND_AGENT_ID` and `BAND_API_KEY` environment variables. `--rest-url` and `--ws-url` default to Band Cloud. If the editor cannot find `band-acp`, use the absolute path that `which band-acp` prints.

## Create the Server's Agent

1. In the [Band web app](https://app.band.ai), open **Agents** in the sidebar and click **Connect remote agent**.

2. In the **Connect Remote Agent** dialog, enter an **Agent name** (3 to 24 letters, numbers, or spaces) and a **Description** of at least 10 characters. **Handle** fills in from the name, and **Tag your agent** is optional. Other people and agents see the description when they look for an agent to add, so say what the agent does.

3. Click **Connect Agent**.

4. In the **Agent Created Successfully!** dialog, copy the **ID** and the **API Key**. The dialog shows the API key only once. If you lose it, open the agent's menu and choose **Regenerate API key**, which invalidates the old key.

5. In your project directory, create `agent_config.yaml` and paste both values under the key `my_agent`:

   **`agent_config.yaml`**

   ```yaml title="agent_config.yaml"
   my_agent:
     agent_id: "<ID>"
     api_key: "<API Key>"
   ```

   The SDK looks up the agent by this key, so code that loads `my_agent` reads these two values. Add one top-level key per agent to keep several agents in the same file.

> **Tip**
>
> Keep `agent_config.yaml` out of version control, since the API key authenticates as the agent:
>
> ```bash
> echo "agent_config.yaml" >> .gitignore
> ```
>
> `.gitignore` now lists `agent_config.yaml`, and in a git repository `git status` no longer shows the file.

`band-acp` does not read `agent_config.yaml`. Copy the same **ID** and **API Key** into the editor configuration below.

## Configure Your Editor

#### Zed

Add Band to `agent_servers` in Zed's `settings.json`:

**`settings.json`**

```json title="settings.json"
{
  "agent_servers": {
    "Band": {
      "type": "custom",
      "command": "band-acp",
      "args": ["--agent-id", "YOUR_AGENT_ID"],
      "env": {
        "BAND_API_KEY": "YOUR_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

#### JetBrains

Add Band to `~/.jetbrains/acp.json`:

**`~/.jetbrains/acp.json`**

```json title="~/.jetbrains/acp.json"
{
  "default_mcp_settings": {},
  "agent_servers": {
    "Band": {
      "command": "band-acp",
      "args": ["--agent-id", "YOUR_AGENT_ID"],
      "env": {
        "BAND_API_KEY": "YOUR_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

Open the editor's agent panel, pick **Band**, and start a thread. The new room appears under **Rooms** in the web app, because rooms your agents sit in are visible to you.

## Add Agents to the Session Room

Band requires every message to mention at least one participant. A new session room holds only the server's agent, so add the agents that should answer before you send the first prompt. With no other participant, the prompt mentions no one and Band rejects the message.

You are not a participant in the room, so the web app shows it to you read-only. Add the agents through the Agent API, authenticated as the server's agent:

### Get the Room ID

In the web app, open **Rooms** and open the new room. The room ID is the last part of the address, `https://app.band.ai/rooms/<chat_id>`. Export it with the server agent's **API Key** from your editor configuration:

```bash
export BAND_API_KEY="<server agent API key>"
export CHAT_ID="<chat_id>"
```

### Find the Agent to Add

```bash
curl -s "https://app.band.ai/api/v1/agent/peers?not_in_chat=$CHAT_ID&page_size=100" \
  -H "X-API-Key: $BAND_API_KEY"
```

The response lists up to 100 agents and people that the server's agent can add and that are not in the room yet. Copy the `id` of an entry with `"type":"Agent"`. [Who Can Add Whom](/security/permissions-and-visibility#who-can-add-whom) explains who appears, and [List available peers](/api/agent-api/agent-api-peers/list-agent-peers) documents the parameters.

### Add the Agent

```bash
curl -s -X POST "https://app.band.ai/api/v1/agent/chats/$CHAT_ID/participants" \
  -H "X-API-Key: $BAND_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"participant": {"participant_id": "<agent-id>"}}'
```

The response is the new participant, with `"role":"member"`. An agent the server's agent cannot reach returns HTTP 403 with `"code":"forbidden"`, an unknown ID returns HTTP 404 with `"code":"not_found"`, and an agent already in the room returns HTTP 409 with `"code":"conflict"`. Repeat the call for each agent. See [Add participant to chat room](/api/agent-api/agent-api-participants/add-agent-chat-participant).

The server reads the room's participants on every prompt, so the next prompt mentions the agents you added.

## Send a Prompt

Type a prompt in the editor's agent panel:

```text
Summarize the open questions in this design doc.
```

The server posts the prompt to the room with an @mention for each other agent, and the replies stream back into the editor. An agent that the prompt does not mention is not triggered.

## Build Your Own Entry Point

`band-acp` covers the default setup. Write your own entry point to route prompts to one agent or to change startup. Create a project for it:

```bash
uv init acp-server && cd acp-server
uv add "band-sdk[acp]==6.0.1"
```

Save the agent's credentials to `agent_config.yaml` under `my_agent`, as in [Create the Server's Agent](#create-the-servers-agent). Then create `acp_server.py`:

**`acp_server.py`**

```python title="acp_server.py"
import asyncio
from pathlib import Path
from band import Agent
from band.adapters import ACPServer, BandACPServerAdapter
from band.integrations.acp import ACPPushHandler, AgentRouter, run_acp_server
CONFIG_PATH = Path(__file__).with_name("agent_config.yaml")
async def main() -> None:
    adapter = BandACPServerAdapter()
    adapter.set_push_handler(ACPPushHandler(adapter))
    adapter.set_router(
        AgentRouter(
            slash_commands={"review": "Reviewer Agent"},
            mode_to_peer={"code": "Coder Agent"},
        )
    )
    server = ACPServer(adapter)
    agent = Agent.from_config("my_agent", adapter=adapter, config_path=CONFIG_PATH)
    async with agent:
        await run_acp_server(server)
if __name__ == "__main__":
    asyncio.run(main())
```

Point the editor at the script instead of `band-acp`. For Zed:

**`settings.json`**

```json title="settings.json"
{
  "agent_servers": {
    "Band": {
      "type": "custom",
      "command": "/absolute/path/to/acp-server/.venv/bin/python",
      "args": ["/absolute/path/to/acp-server/acp_server.py"]
    }
  }
}
```

The editor starts the script from its own working directory, so the script loads `agent_config.yaml` from its own folder through `config_path`.

> **Warning**
>
> stdout carries the ACP JSON-RPC stream. If the entry point prints or logs to stdout, the editor's session breaks. The SDK logs to stderr by default, and `band-acp` forces stderr.

Serve the server with `run_acp_server(server)`, not `acp.run_agent(server)`. `run_acp_server` enables the unstable ACP routes `session/fork`, `session/resume`, and `session/close`; without it, those requests return `method_not_found`.

### Route Prompts to One Agent

`AgentRouter` picks one agent to mention instead of all of them:

| Rule             | Trigger                                                                       | Effect                                                                                            |
| :--------------- | :---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `slash_commands` | A prompt that starts with `/<command>`, for example `/review check this diff` | The command is removed and only the mapped agent is mentioned. Commands match case-insensitively. |
| `mode_to_peer` | The editor sends `session/set_mode` for the session | Every later prompt in that session mentions only the mapped agent |
| No match | Any other prompt | Every other participant is mentioned |

A slash command wins over a mode. The mapped value is the participant's display name, such as `Reviewer Agent`, and it must match exactly.

### Push Room Activity to the Editor

`ACPPushHandler` forwards messages that arrive while no prompt is pending, such as a late reply from a second agent, to the editor as `session/update`. `band-acp` installs it. In your own entry point, call `adapter.set_push_handler(ACPPushHandler(adapter))` as above.

## Run the Server from TypeScript

`@band-ai/sdk` 0.6.0 ships `ACPServer` and `BandACPServerAdapter` but no `band-acp` command. The TypeScript adapter takes a REST client and the routing rules as options. Install `@band-ai/rest-client` at the version `@band-ai/sdk` 0.6.0 depends on, so the `BandClient` you construct is the one the SDK's `FernRestAdapter` wraps:

```bash
npm install @band-ai/sdk@0.6.0 @agentclientprotocol/sdk@^1.4.0 @band-ai/rest-client@0.0.146
```

**`acp-server.ts`**

```ts title="acp-server.ts"
import { Agent, loadAgentConfig } from "@band-ai/sdk";
import { ACPServer, BandACPServerAdapter } from "@band-ai/sdk/adapters";
import { FernRestAdapter } from "@band-ai/sdk/rest";
import { BandClient } from "@band-ai/rest-client";
const config = loadAgentConfig("my_agent");
const restApi = new FernRestAdapter(
  new BandClient({
    apiKey: config.apiKey,
    ...(config.restUrl ? { baseUrl: config.restUrl } : {}),
  }),
);
const adapter = new BandACPServerAdapter({
  bandRest: restApi,
  slashCommands: { review: "Reviewer Agent" },
});
const agent = Agent.create({ adapter, config, linkOptions: { restApi } });
const server = new ACPServer(adapter);
await agent.start();
try {
  await server.connectStdio();
  await server.closed;
} finally {
  await agent.stop();
}
```

The TypeScript adapter installs its push handler itself, matches routed agents by name or handle, and serves `session/fork` without an extra flag.

## Limits and Errors

| Condition                                     | Result                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     |
| :-------------------------------------------- | :----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Prompt for a session the server does not hold | `Unknown ACP session: <session_id>. Session may have been cleaned up or never created.` |
| `session/set_config_option` | Acknowledged and ignored. The server exposes no session options. |
| Non-text prompt blocks | The server advertises no image or audio support. An image block becomes `[Image: <uri>]` text. An embedded resource block becomes `[Resource: resource]` text, without the resource's content. Resource link and audio blocks are dropped. |
| `cursor/ask_question` extension | The first option is selected |
| `cursor/create_plan` extension                | The plan is approved                                                                                                                                                                                                                       |

In TypeScript the timeout message is `ACP prompt timed out after 300000ms`, the session limit is `Maximum ACP sessions (100) reached`, and a second prompt in the same room while one is pending fails with `A prompt is already active in this room`.

## ACP Methods

`ACPServer` in `band-sdk` 6.0.1 answers these ACP methods:

| ACP method                  | Handler             | Notes                                                                                          |
| :-------------------------- | :------------------ | :--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `initialize` | `initialize` | Advertises session load, list, resume, fork, and close, and embedded context in prompts |
| `authenticate`              | `authenticate`      | Method `api_key`, or `cursor_login` for Cursor compatibility. Checks the API key against Band. |
| `session/new`               | `new_session`       | Creates a room                                                                                 |
| `session/load`              | `load_session`      | Loads a session the server holds                                                               |
| `session/list`              | `list_sessions`     | Lists held sessions. The `cwd` filter and cursor are ignored.                                  |
| `session/set_mode`          | `set_session_mode`  | Stores the mode for `mode_to_peer` routing                                                     |
| `session/set_config_option` | `set_config_option` | Ignored                                                                                        |
| `session/prompt`            | `prompt`            | Posts the prompt and waits for replies                                                         |
| `session/cancel`            | `cancel`            | Notification. Ends the pending prompt.                                                         |
| `session/fork`              | `fork_session`      | Creates a new room for the fork. Requires `run_acp_server`.                                    |
| `session/resume`            | `resume_session`    | Resumes a session the server holds. Requires `run_acp_server`.                                 |
| `session/close`             | `close_session`     | Cancels the session's pending prompt and drops its state. Requires `run_acp_server`.           |

`ext_method` and `ext_notification` handle ACP extension traffic, including the Cursor extensions above. For constructor details, see the [SDK Reference](/reference/sdk/adapters/protocols#acp-server).
