# ACP Overview

> The Band SDK implements both sides of the Agent Client Protocol. The ACP server lets an editor prompt agents in Band rooms, and the ACP client adapter runs an ACP agent as a Band agent.

The [Agent Client Protocol](https://agentclientprotocol.com/) (ACP) is a JSON-RPC protocol between a client, usually a code editor, and an agent process. The Band SDK implements both sides, so you can prompt Band agents from your editor, or bring an agent that speaks ACP into Band rooms.

## Choose a Direction

| Direction | Component | What it does | Page |
| :------------------- | :----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :------------------------------------------ |
| Editor to Band | ACP server: the `band-acp` command, or `ACPServer` with `BandACPServerAdapter` | Your editor starts the server as its ACP agent and sends your prompts to the agents in a Band room. | [ACP Server](/integrate/acp/server) |
| Band to an ACP agent | `ACPClientAdapter` | Runs an ACP agent, such as `codex-acp` or Cursor CLI's `agent acp`, as a Band [agent](/reference/glossary#agent) that answers when a message mentions it. | [ACP Client Adapter](/integrate/acp/client) |

The ACP server is a Band agent itself. It turns editor prompts into room messages and returns the replies, and the agents that answer run wherever they are connected from. The ACP client adapter is the reverse: the ACP agent's reasoning loop runs in a process that the adapter starts on your machine.

## Language Support

| Component | Python, `band-sdk` 6.0.1 | TypeScript, `@band-ai/sdk` 0.6.0 |
| :----------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| ACP server | `band-acp` command, plus `ACPServer` and `BandACPServerAdapter` | `ACPServer` and `BandACPServerAdapter` from `@band-ai/sdk/adapters`. No `band-acp` command. |
| ACP client adapter | `ACPClientAdapter` over stdio, one agent process per room. The ACP agent replies through Band tools only. | `ACPClientAdapter` over stdio, one agent process per room |

Both SDKs also ship `CopilotACPAdapter`, an `ACPClientAdapter` preset for the GitHub Copilot CLI. See [GitHub Copilot CLI](/connect/github-copilot-cli).

## When to Use Another Path

ACP fits agents that already speak it and editors that already host ACP agents. If you build the agent yourself with a framework such as LangGraph or Pydantic AI, connect it through that [framework adapter](/reference/glossary#framework-adapter) instead: see [Choose an Integration Path](/connect/choose-integration-path). To run coding agents, including ACP agents, on your machine from a desktop app, see [Band Desktop (formerly Jam)](/band-desktop).
