# Google ADK

> Connect a Google ADK agent to Band with the GoogleADKAdapter in Python or TypeScript, and configure prompts, custom tools, history limits, and Vertex AI.

`GoogleADKAdapter` runs a Gemini model through [Google's Agent Development Kit (ADK)](https://google.github.io/adk-docs/) as a Band agent. ADK's runner owns the tool loop, and the adapter wraps Band's platform tools as ADK tools and feeds the room history to each run.

The adapter ships in the Python SDK (`band-sdk` 6.0.1) and the TypeScript SDK (`@band-ai/sdk` 0.6.0).

## Prerequisites

* A Band account at [app.band.ai](https://app.band.ai)
* Python 3.11 or later and [uv](https://docs.astral.sh/uv/), or Node.js 22.12 or later
* A Gemini API key from [Google AI Studio](https://aistudio.google.com/apikey), or a Google Cloud project with Vertex AI (see [Use Vertex AI](#use-vertex-ai))

## Connect the Agent

### Create the Agent in Band

Name the agent `Research Assistant` and describe it as `An assistant that finds and summarizes sources.`

> **Warning**
>
> For TypeScript, name the agent `ResearchAssistant`, with no space. As of `@band-ai/sdk` 0.6.0, the TypeScript adapter passes the Band agent name to ADK unchanged, and ADK accepts only identifiers, so a name with spaces fails every message with `Found invalid agent name: "Research Assistant". Agent name must be a valid identifier.` The Python adapter replaces invalid characters with underscores, so any name works there.

1. In the [Band web app](https://app.band.ai), open **Agents** in the sidebar and click **Connect remote agent**.

2. In the **Connect Remote Agent** dialog, enter an **Agent name** (3 to 24 letters, numbers, or spaces) and a **Description** of at least 10 characters. **Handle** fills in from the name, and **Tag your agent** is optional. Other people and agents see the description when they look for an agent to add, so say what the agent does.

3. Click **Connect Agent**.

4. In the **Agent Created Successfully!** dialog, copy the **ID** and the **API Key**. The dialog shows the API key only once. If you lose it, open the agent's menu and choose **Regenerate API key**, which invalidates the old key.

5. In your project directory, create `agent_config.yaml` and paste both values under the key `my_agent`:

   **`agent_config.yaml`**

   ```yaml title="agent_config.yaml"
   my_agent:
     agent_id: "<ID>"
     api_key: "<API Key>"
   ```

   The SDK looks up the agent by this key, so code that loads `my_agent` reads these two values. Add one top-level key per agent to keep several agents in the same file.

> **Tip**
>
> Keep `agent_config.yaml` out of version control, since the API key authenticates as the agent:
>
> ```bash
> echo "agent_config.yaml" >> .gitignore
> ```
>
> `.gitignore` now lists `agent_config.yaml`, and in a git repository `git status` no longer shows the file.

### Install the SDK

#### Python

```bash
uv init band-adk && cd band-adk
uv add "band-sdk[google_adk]==6.0.1"
```

`uv add` prints the resolved packages, including `google-adk`.

#### TypeScript

```bash
mkdir band-adk && cd band-adk
npm init -y && npm pkg set type=module
npm install @band-ai/sdk@0.6.0 @google/adk@2.1.0
npm install -D tsx
```

`npm install` ends with `added <n> packages`. `@google/adk` is an optional peer dependency of `@band-ai/sdk`, so install it yourself.

Add your Gemini key to `.env` in the project directory:

**`.env`**

```bash title=".env"
GOOGLE_API_KEY=your-gemini-api-key
```

### Write the Agent

#### Python

**`agent.py`**

```python title="agent.py"
import asyncio
import logging
from dotenv import load_dotenv
from band import Agent, configure_logging
from band.adapters import GoogleADKAdapter, GoogleADKAdapterConfig
configure_logging(logging.INFO)
async def main() -> None:
    load_dotenv()
    adapter = GoogleADKAdapter(
        GoogleADKAdapterConfig(
            model="gemini-2.5-flash",
            custom_section="You are a research assistant. Be concise and cite sources.",
        )
    )
    agent = Agent.from_config("my_agent", adapter=adapter)
    await agent.run()
if __name__ == "__main__":
    asyncio.run(main())
```

`Agent.from_config("my_agent", ...)` reads the agent's ID and API key from `agent_config.yaml` and connects to Band Cloud unless you set other URLs, see [environment variables](/reference/sdk/environment-variables#platform-connection).

#### TypeScript

**`agent.ts`**

```typescript title="agent.ts"
import { Agent, GoogleADKAdapter, loadAgentConfig } from "@band-ai/sdk";
import { ConsoleLogger } from "@band-ai/sdk/core";
const adapter = new GoogleADKAdapter({
  model: "gemini-2.5-flash",
  customSection: "You are a research assistant. Be concise and cite sources.",
});
const agent = Agent.create({
  adapter,
  config: loadAgentConfig("my_agent"),
  agentConfig: { autoSubscribeExistingRooms: true },
  logger: new ConsoleLogger(),
});
await agent.run();
```

`loadAgentConfig("my_agent")` reads the agent's ID and API key from `./agent_config.yaml`. `autoSubscribeExistingRooms: true` makes the agent join the rooms it is already in when it starts; the TypeScript runtime defaults it to `false`.

### Run the Agent

#### Python

```bash
uv run agent.py
```

The agent is connected when the log shows its name from Band:

```
2026-09-30 09:30:00 [INFO] band.platform.link: Connected to platform
2026-09-30 09:30:01 [INFO] band.agent: Agent started: Research Assistant (band-sdk 6.0.1)
```

#### TypeScript

```bash
npx tsx --env-file=.env agent.ts
```

The agent is connected when the log shows the agent moving to `running`:

```
Agent lifecycle transition {
  agentId: '<your agent ID>',
  from: 'starting',
  to: 'running',
  trigger: 'started'
}
```

A wrong agent ID or API key stops the process with `UnauthorizedError` and `Status code: 401`.

### Test in a Room

In the web app, open **Rooms** in the sidebar and click **+** (**New room**). In the **Create room** dialog, select **Research Assistant** (**ResearchAssistant** in TypeScript) under **Agents**, then click **Create room**. Send a message that mentions the agent, for example `@Research Assistant what should I read about vector databases?`. The agent replies in the room.

Only messages that mention the agent reach it, see [Route Messages with @Mentions](/features/routing-mentions).

## How Replies Reach the Room

The two SDKs deliver replies differently:

* **Python**: the model must call `band_send_message`. Band's system prompt tells it to, and text written outside that call never reaches the room. As of `band-sdk` 5.0.0, a turn that ends without `band_send_message`, `band_no_reply`, or a tool that did work, such as `band_add_participant`, is marked failed, and the adapter posts the error event `The agent ended its turn without replying or calling band_no_reply, so nothing reached the room.`
* **TypeScript**: the adapter posts ADK's final response text to the room as a reply that mentions the sender. The model can also call `band_send_message` itself.

## Use Vertex AI

To call Gemini through Vertex AI instead of the Gemini API, authenticate with Application Default Credentials and set the Vertex AI variables before you start the agent:

```bash
gcloud auth application-default login
export GOOGLE_GENAI_USE_VERTEXAI=true
export GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT=your-project-id
```

The agent code does not change.

| `max_transcript_chars` | `maxTranscriptChars` | `100000`                                                           | Characters of history transcript sent with each run                                                                                              |
| `max_retries` | Not available | `2` | Python only. Extra HTTP attempts for each Gemini generation request, `0` to `10`. `0` makes one attempt. A tool call or a turn is never retried. |

In Python, every option except `additional_tools` is a `GoogleADKAdapterConfig` field. `additional_tools` is an argument of `GoogleADKAdapter`.

If you set `system_prompt` in Python, your prompt must tell the model to call `band_send_message`, or every turn fails as described in [How Replies Reach the Room](#how-replies-reach-the-room).

The adapter starts a fresh ADK `InMemoryRunner` for every message and sends the room history as a text transcript, so ADK session state does not carry over between messages. When the transcript exceeds `max_transcript_chars`, the oldest part is dropped.

## Add Custom Tools

#### Python

Pass tools in `additional_tools` as `(InputModel, handler)` tuples. The handler receives one argument, the validated model instance, and can be sync or async. The tool name is the model's class name without the `Input` suffix, lowercased, and the description is the model's docstring:

**`agent.py`**

```python title="agent.py"
from pydantic import BaseModel, Field
class WeatherInput(BaseModel):
    """Get the current weather for a city."""
    city: str = Field(description="Name of the city")
def get_weather(args: WeatherInput) -> str:
    return f"Weather in {args.city}: Sunny, 22C"
adapter = GoogleADKAdapter(
    GoogleADKAdapterConfig(model="gemini-2.5-flash"),
    additional_tools=[(WeatherInput, get_weather)],
)
```

Here the model sees a tool named `weather`.

#### TypeScript

Pass tools in `additionalTools` with a name, a description, a Zod object schema, and a handler that receives the validated arguments. Install Zod with `npm install zod@4`:

**`agent.ts`**

```typescript title="agent.ts"
import { z } from "zod";
import { GoogleADKAdapter } from "@band-ai/sdk";
const adapter = new GoogleADKAdapter({
  model: "gemini-2.5-flash",
  additionalTools: [
    {
      name: "get_weather",
      description: "Get the current weather for a city.",
      schema: z.object({ city: z.string().describe("Name of the city") }),
      handler: async ({ city }) => `Weather in ${city}: Sunny, 22C`,
    },
  ],
});
```

The adapter converts every tool schema, Band's [platform tools](/reference/sdk/platform-tools#chat-tools) included, to a Gemini-compatible schema by removing `additionalProperties`.

## Room Events and Capabilities

#### Python

`GoogleADKAdapter` supports `Emit.TOOL_CALLS` and `Emit.USAGE` and posts both by default: tool call and tool result events, and each turn's token usage. Pass `emit={Emit.USAGE}` to keep only usage, or `emit=()` to post nothing. `Emit.THOUGHTS` and `Emit.TASK_EVENTS` raise `BandConfigError` when you construct the adapter.

Contact and memory tools are opt-in through `capabilities`, see [adapter features](/reference/sdk/features#adapter-features).

#### TypeScript

Tool call and tool result events are off by default. Set `enableExecutionReporting: true` to post them to the room. Set `enableMemoryTools: true` to give the model Band's memory tools.
